Day 6: Natural Building (playing with mud is fun!!!)

Natural building is about using local, renewable materials that are easily available.
Today, Joshua helped us to make a plaster to put on the walls of the barn. The barn walls are wood frames stuffed with straw that was dipped in clay. Our job was to make a coating to protect the walls from Portland's rain.

The plaster is really easy to make. It's just water, clay, sand and finely cut straw. When you combine them, just make sure you put water in first, then sand, clay, and straw. It is easier to add dry stuff to wet stuff. Here are the ingredients being mixed, just like in baking a cake.
The plaster even looks like chocolate!
If only...
we were building a chocolate house!
(that's natural to me!)

Chloe and Emi are trimming the barn walls so that straw isn't sticking out before plastering.

Ninja Nick in protective gear all ready to cut up the straw with a weed wacker.
